History with its flickering lamp stumbles along the trail of the past, trying to reconstruct its scenes, to revive its echoes, and kindle with pale gleams the passion of former days. ~Winston Churchill

Tiger Cubs of the 1940s

Nothing dramatic or insightful today, just the LIFE version of Zooborns. This adorable series captures newborn tiger cubs being cared for by Mrs. Martini, the wife of a Bronx Zoo keeper, after their mother wouldn't nurse, 1944.

"The America of 1960"

An incredible, 35,700 square foot model envisioning the United States in 1960 at the General Motors exhibit at the 1939 World's Fair. Called "Futurama" and designed by Norman Bel Geddes, it was the fair's hit attraction, full to capacity every day. Visitors rode on conveyor simulating an aerial journey over the model. More info is here, and a colour video is here.

These photographs are by Alfred Eisenstaedt, turning his unsurpassed photographer's eye on the model for LIFE magazine.

The Eye of the Photographer

I've raved about the photographer Alfred Eisenstaedt many a time-- he constantly blows me away with his ability to see and create amazing captures of anything, anywhere. Like, how about these photographs of newly constructed buildings for the 1939 World's Fair in New York?

Insane Asylum

A sad and disturbing photo essay by Alfred Eisenstaedt, depicting the realities of life at an insane asylum. These are undated; 40s-50s, perhaps?
