History with its flickering lamp stumbles along the trail of the past, trying to reconstruct its scenes, to revive its echoes, and kindle with pale gleams the passion of former days. ~Winston Churchill

Go to Kew

High time for a revisit of the amazing poster collections of the London Transport Museum! Posters celebrating flowers and spring are some of the collection's loveliest. Some of my absolute favourites of these are those promoting Kew Gardens, the Royal Botanic Gardens of London (and a truly lovely place; the posters aren't exaggerating!). One of my earliest posts shared a number of great Kew posters; here is another set.

Grow Careful

Another collection to add to the rounds! Wellcome Images is a part of the Wellcome Collection, a terrific, quirky-yet-intellectual museum located in London (I highly reccomend a visit--it's free, too!). The site encompasses a huge number of photographs, "with themes ranging from medical and social history to contemporary healthcare and biomedical science" (Source). While on the one hand it is a commercial image library, specializing in medical images, they've also recently released a large number of historical images, available for free creative commons use. This is what we like to hear!

Anyway, so these are the fruits of my first jaunt into their holdings-- some terrific health and safety posters created by the British Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (which apparently still exists under that great name). Unfortunately, as this collection is image-based, very little contextual information is given, not even dates. Visually they look quite a bit like WPA posters and WW2-era British posters, so my guess is late 1930s to late 1940s, but I'm not at all a poster expert. Mid-century, almost certainly.

Wanted Posters of the 19th Century (With Photographs)

The Nova Scotia Archives has a terrific collection of wanted posters from 1868-1888 (assembled in a scrapbook from the time period), and something I find especially fascinating is the number containing photographs, even at this relatively early date in the history of photography. The photographs appear to come from prior studio sessions of the individuals in question, probably either reprinted (studios kept negatives on file) or re-photographed from a carte-de-visite or cabinet card and printed for the posters. It's an interesting contrast, the genteel carte-de-visite portrait paired with the crimes their sitters are accused of.

Posters, Photographed

While I love looking at old posters reproduced or displayed individually, this kind of presentation is often vastly different from the posters' original context. I always find it fascinating to see photographs of posters in situ, to see the places they were posted and the other posters they were displayed with (almost always many others, or repeats of the same). This blog has already had posts of wartime posters on the street and two editions of London Transport posters; today, a variety.

The Art of Abram Games

Some of the striking posters of Abram Games, British Official War Poster Designer in World War Two (he also did many of these posters). After the war he worked freelance, creating striking images throughout the century, including some great ones for London Transport (see this post). He was also known by the name "Olympic" Games, which is just plain awesome.

From the Imperial War Museum (except one from the London Transport Museum).

London Transport Posters of the 1960s

While the 20s and 30s were a Golden Age of London Transport poster design, these 60s ones certainly have their charms!

War Posters on the Street

We've seen all kinds of wartime posters, from  "enlist now" to "buy war bonds" to "save food". However, seeing the nicely scanned image on the page is something different to seeing it in context. Today, a collection of World War Two posters where they were meant to be seen.
